It is my pleasure to present what I feel is the most advanced, as well as THE ONLY five-day equine massage school for HORSE and RIDER/STUDENT anywhere in the world (to the best of my knowledge), teaching the most effective performance-related subjects which apply to HORSE and HUMAN performance. There are other 5- day programs, but our program is unique because we cover more than just massage, stretching and marketing. Because of my personal success in the sports world since 1985, along with my unique experiences in fitness since 1963, I guarantee there is no school teaching what I do, the way I do.
Although there is a great deal of knowledge in fitness today (some of you may be well educated in the subject), I will guarantee you will learn some very different and more effective approaches to achieving your ultimate goals related to health.
I have often said there are three kinds of people in this life: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened! I am confident that you will be happy that you chose Geary Whiting’s Equine Massage School for Horse and Rider, located in the beautiful Big Sur area — A school where you will learn how to make things happen.
As you will soon see, I cover a lot of subjects in a five-day school. When putting these subjects into my program, I had to ask myself, “Can I teach these adequately?” Do I really need to have all of these subjects?” After all, no other school that I know of covers so much in five days. The answer was YES! So how can I do so much in such a short amount of time, you may ask? In explaining, I would like to give you a little history on myself.
As a child growing up, I faced some learning problems which were not known at the time. I had serious problems in school. I just could not pass a test, nor was I getting what the teacher was trying to teach. This was because of two learning disabilities that are common today: attention deficit disorder and dyslexia (A.D.D. is really no more than a busy mind that most teachers have trouble working with because their subject matter isn’t very interesting). Neither of these conditions were known back in the 50s and 60s. When I was in my 30s, I came to realize I had these problems and also knew I had to work with them. The way I came to learn how to deal with them is a very interesting story in and of itself.
Growing up in the town of Cayucos, California (population 1,950), I was fortunate to have a mother and grandmother who worked in the family grocery store. My grandmother had a fail-safe method of knowing if a watermelon was ripe. She would plug the melon. For those who do not know what plugging a melon is, I shall tell you.
She had a tool about four inches long which had a half moon shape with serrated edges allowing it to cut into the melon. She would rotate it 360 degrees, then pull it out. With it came the core of the melon. From that point it was quite easy to determine if it was ripe. The taste test was always used as well as the nose. If it wasn’t ripe, grandmother would simply put the plug back in and wait for a day or two.
As a little child, I was quite curious and would take a close look at the melon to see if I could find where the plug was — usually with no success. I would have to look ever so closely, as the outline of the circle was faint.
It was to be that example that would help me in my education. It made it possible for me to overcome my learning problems which was concerning to me because of my embarrassment from not being able to fit in with the rest of the kids. Perhaps this explains why I had been in 50 fights by age 20. Fortunately, helping people through the use of massage gave me purpose and the fighting disappeared.
Through grandmother’s example of getting to the heart of the core, I learned to do the same thing with education. I started asking, “what is the point of this conversation, what is the point of what I am learning, and what is the point of what is coming out of my mouth?” What is the value of it all? This is where I learned to look for the bottom line to everything.
This was the method I had to develop, as I could not afford to waste time. So I would ask, “what is the point here? Let’s quit wasting time and get on with it!” Eventually, I would have to learn the art of being patient with others. I have never liked small talk much, as I saw it as a waste of time for the most part. Getting to the point became a way of life for me, in part, out of necessity, and in part because the concept was always on my mind.
To this day, I am able to see the core of the issue, and get to the point quicker than most, because of all the work I did in learning this technique. Because of all I had to go through in my life, I am able to teach all of these subjects that you see in front of you, and do it quite successfully. I get to the core of each subject and leave the not so important stuff alone.
Like grandmother and her melons, I get to the heart of each subject, and present my students with as near perfect education as I can, in order for them to achieve the highest success in their new business. For those not wanting to make a business in equine massage, they will go home knowing they now have the tools to take care of our special friends, be it horse, dog, or cat. You can even help your human friends feel better with your new touch.
The best place to start is to give you the concept of my program. It is designed to make the HORSE ACTUALLY WANT TO BE AROUND YOU, rather than agitated with what you are doing. From time to time I have seen this very thing occur with some of my students who had obvious personal issues. Even though they may have fooled the teacher, they could not fool the horse, and the student ended up walking around circles trying to keep up with the animal. Once their issues were addressed, the horse stood still.
I am reminded of the book, It Isn’t About The Horse, and think it applies here. I have adopted the motto, RECAPTURE TRUE VALUES. In these values we will go back to campfire talks, lots of time spent together with the sharing of ideas, and experiences. Much can be accomplished in this style of education I have found.
The sharing of each other’s life’s stories and experiences go a long way toward sound learning. Before TV, and it’s mindless entertainment, the listening of parents, grandparents, and their friends gave one a lot of information to carry through life. This has, and always will be the best way to learn. Real life experiences, Real people, REAL GOOD RESULTS. School is also to be fun. I hope you become as excited about my program as much as I am excited about teaching it.
The classes focus on methods like tightly integrated massage, anatomy, physiology, pathology, shoeing and trimming, saddle making and fitting, and reading the horse lessons all focus on how the subject relates to movement. We will look at these in depth below.
Anatomy: There is no memorization work required, nor homework. I cover the function of the important muscles and how it affects the horse’s ability to perform as well as how to recognize where the problem is. I teach a more practical approach rather than have you memorize a lot of muscle names (which I find is useless in the art of Shiatsu) only to forget them soon after the test. If it were important, I would certainly teach it. Learning muscle names has nothing to do with the ability to perform a good massage.
Basic Horsemanship: This is the basic groundwork for those who have not spent much time around horses. This class is meant to help the beginner look and act more like a professional and not get injured. For those who have not spent much time with horses, this will be a tremendous help to you. Quite often, other students contribute much in the way of horsemanship by sharing their experiences with the beginner. So if you don’t have much experience with horses, this class is for you. Don’t get all tied into knots; that is for the horses at the hitching post.
Hoof Care: The key word here is BALANCE! I will be covering proper balance, as well as how to prevent foot problems. You may want to go to www.hoofrehab.com where you will find some valuable information on this subject. I recommend you take a look at that site, as it will answer some questions you may want addressed. Since I became interested in this subject, I now find myself looking at the foot of the horse before I work on it. Remember, if the foot is not correct it will affect not only the horse’s performance, but what is happening in the muscles and skeleton. This is a very important subject to be sure.
Massage: What would a massage school be without this subject? You will be learning the powerful Japanese healing art of Shiatsu. Because of its effectiveness, you can expect a lot of great results during and after leaving school. To get a better idea, you can read the Billy Letters. You too will be able to accomplish the same results in a very short time, guaranteed.
Nutrition: You will learn about the problems horses (and people) encounter because of the lack of sound nutrition. You will learn WHAT causes the health problems, HOW to get rid of them, and HOW TO PREVENT them. You will not find a more sound and balanced approach to good health anywhere else! You and your clients will greatly appreciate this wonderful life saving knowledge. This will be taught on Monday morning. With a doctorate in holistic studies, I put most of my efforts in preventing problems, NATURALLY. Prevention has many rewards; for one, it will cut your cost in doctor bills. This is my favorite subject, and I hope it will also become yours.
Saddle Fitting: This is another IMPORTANT subject. Believe it or not, there are many who do not understand how to fit a saddle. They can see the problem the horse is having with its attitude, but the person has no clue what the horse is telling them. They do not understand that horses want to work with us, but when in pain, the horse is not eager to cooperate or simply can’t. This will be discussed in school. This subject alone is worth coming to school for. Even if you do a good massage, soon after the ride begins, ALL of your work will go down the drain if the saddle is not fit properly, and your services will have no value to the owner. Let’s not forget what the horse is going through.
Marketing: This is one of my favorite parts of school. Here is where I can share the nitty-gritty aspects of making it in business. There are LAWS that if followed will guarantee your success in business. If not followed, you will fail. You will learn from my experiences of success and failure, as well as the laws which guarantee success. It is always good to have a role model; I need them, and so do you. We learn best by example – preferably a good example. One of the more valuable parts of the school is learning how to do a presentation as well as marketing yourself at the same time. For those who find talking in front of an audience to be intimidating, don’t worry!
With my eleven years in Ambassador Spokesman Clubs, I can give you the bottom line to speaking effectively. I will give you some food for thought on this subject. Always speak from the heart, and never talk about something you know little about. By the time you complete my program, you will have a great deal of new knowledge as well as new found excitement and a lot to talk about.
It will be easy for you to be enthusiastic and with a little guidance from your teacher, you will be able to present your subject quite well. Again, this is an important part of school, as this knowledge can make or break your business.
Workout Program: You will be learning the techniques I have used with many world class athletes since 1981. I will be teaching you how to get the greatest results out of your personal workouts; that is, getting the most value for the time spent working out and getting better results in a shorter amount of time (cutting out the fat so to speak). The keys I teach you will help you, no matter what form of working out you decide to do.
Being fit is important as it will allow you to be more efficient, as well as effective, in your massages. It will also allow you to do more horses per day. The more strength you have, the more strength you have, the more money you will make in this business or any other business which has physical demands to it. This is an undisputed fact! Why do two horses a day when you can do eight? By being fit and strong, that adds up to more energy and more money. Also, it will give you many health benefits which will have a very positive effect on your life.
Your Own DVD: You will receive my instructional DVD on massage, stretching and saddle fitting, along with a binder filled with priceless material. This is time-tested knowledge. My DVD on massage, stretching and saddle fitting will be sent to you as soon as i receive your deposit. This will give you an opportunity to practice and learn before attending school. It will help you to feel comfortable and be able to grasp the subjects taught in school quickly, no matter who or how old you are. The youngest student was 11 and the oldest was 63 years of age!
Q & A Session: This is where we pick each other’s brain and make sure you don’t have any unanswered questions. This will be the end of your program where I make sure I have left nothing unaddressed.
As you can see, this is an exciting as well as informative and well balanced program. It is my goal to give you an education that will enhance your life, as well as the life of those you come into contact with, both horse and human.
Liability Insurance: Upon graduation, you will receive a $3,000,000.00 liability insurance policy at a very reasonable price. This will cover you and your business no matter where you are. If you are a minor, you will need to wait until you reach the magic age of 18 to activate your policy. As a professional working at shows and such, you will most likely be required to prove that you are covered; not to mention the association putting on the shows will want to know they are protected as well. The insurance company will add them to your policy when you call or email them. They will fax the information to the person in charge of the horse show. Now you’re good to go and ready to do business.
Something new has been added to the 2016 program you will truly appreciate. Many of my students have been using the horse massage techniques to help their loved ones with their headaches, neck and back problems and have contacted me, thanking me for their ability to now do something for their family members problems.
So, I have added the basics of what I do with people into the program, and since you will already know how to do a horse you will pick it up easy since there is no difference between horse and human. With this new skill, my students are equipped to do a much better job for those closest to them as well as have a new tool for horse shows. Even though they will not be able to charge for this as they will not be certified in human massage, it will open doors for getting to the horses as they need to go through the trainers and owners and of course, trainers and owners have stress and headaches.
Once they are made to feel better they are often very happy and accommodating to let you get your hands on their horses. This is how I got to the horses in 1995 when no one had heard of equine massage; it worked great then and still does. Again, things I teach for the real world are what has set my program well ahead of the trend. I hope to see you in school.
Lodging: There are cabins for your comfort as well as camping areas. For those who want to camp outdoors we have several areas to make this possible. Please let me know ahead of time. You may wish to bring your own camping gear, or I can provide it for you. For those using the cabins, generally there is one person assigned per cabin unless there is a very large group. In the rare case that this happens, we will use the buddy system.
The shower area is outside, close to the cabins. BRING FLIP-FLOPS FOR FEET AND FLASHLIGHTS.
Meals: All of your meals are provided. I have a tendency to eat more along the lines of basic sound nutrition. I don’t hold a hard line on this; rather using it as a guideline. I will cover many sound eating principles such as NO DIET DRINKS while you are in school, as well as a little guiding of what to buy as far as quality food. This is also a SMOKE FREE ENVIRONMENT (unless someone is burning the food. Don’t worry, that hasn’t happened yet).
We will be having dinners each evening at the famous, and elegant, Treebones Resort. Menu selections include chicken, salmon, steak, tuna, tofu and more. There is also a new item – Tagines. This is a hearty, Moroccan style stew in an authentic tagine and made for two.
Outings: This is a very important part of my school. The Big Sur area is an absolute paradise, so I take special care to make sure you get to see some of the local attractions while you are here. All outings are taken care of by the school. You may wish to buy some gifts, but you’ll be on your own there. For those of you who are driving, you should plan to spend a couple of extra days; it is really worth it. I can guarantee an experience of a lifetime.
Party Time: Thursday evening, we liven things up a bit – party time! You will also be taught my technique on how to get rid of headaches for people. This is actually a very important subject, as it will open many doors for your success in working on horses. I have found that if the owner feels better because I got rid of their headache, they were more than happy to find me a couple of horses to work on. Because of this valuable knowledge, I have landed some very good accounts. One paid as much as $6,000.00 a month for only FOUR DAYS of work the entire month. This is why this is in my program; simply put, it makes me money, it will make you money, and it helps people get rid of pain. This is one of those subjects you will not find in other schools, especially since it is my personal technique.
Personal Photos: Bring your camera! These pictures will be important to your business. You can even put them on YOUR website. So start thinking of what you wish to wear for your photo session with your test horse. Sorry, but we don’t have a make-up artist on the set of this production. You know, we had to make some budget cuts.

Why would I make such a statement? This is not simply an equine therapy or equine massage program… it is a complete experience which will show you who and what you are, revealing your strengths and shortcomings, preparing you to be successful with the horses. This is important since 85% of those in massage “DON’T MAKE IT,” in the real world of equine massage, or human massage, according to the massage teachers I have talked with over the years.
In the mid 90’s when I started my school, I thought I was going to be teaching the typical equine massage therapy school, with the usual limited subjects of anatomy, marketing, and massage. I was wrong; it would eventually become the most advanced and needed program for horse AND human. I had no idea that an equine massage program could produce such passion in a person, a simple thing such as horse massage was showing me the lost child in my students had finally made its way home. What it was to do for me was more than I would have imagined back in 1997.
Marriage problems, lacking direction, going after childhood dreams, or simply just trying to find themselves was my typical student. My program provided answers they felt they desperately needed, and when they went through my website it was easy to see they would be doing more than learning how to do a great horse massage. You can see this in the letters of endorsement on my site. Of course, there were those students who knew where they were in life and simply saw my school as a way of achieving their goal in a fun way. I had adopted the fun way to education, because I love to have fun. Not the typical sterile approach of memorizing subject matter, which simply was not real world, only textbook theory.
In looking at my accomplishments, students would want to attend my school just to see, how one person could have accomplished so much in their lifetime. Sadly, there are some who simply are not up to the task of going through what it takes to achieve the many experiences life offers us, yet, with the proper education could.
Over the years I have produced many fine students who have found the keys to loving life, fixing their marriages, or simply succeeding at whatever it was they were trying to do. In a word, the school gave them back their E-MOTION or passion for living and doing. All this and learning to do a really great job massaging horses.
If you are a person who only wishes to learn how to massage a horse, please look at another school, but if you wish to have your heart massaged along with the horses you will be working on while here, then please, come to my program.
The all inclusive cost is $2295.00 includes the following.
